Broadcast Bio: Any parent who ever wished that children came with an instruction manual will be interested in what Sherry Rhodes has to say. Sherry is a retired teacher and author of The Parent's Complete Guide - What to Teach, How and When to Teach It, a new book created to help all parents turn their children into responsible adults. Welcome, Sherry.
Full Bio: While teaching middle school and high school, lifelong educator Sherry Rhodes realized that too many students weren't learning basic life skills such as ethics, respect, values, manners, or even such things as proper nutrition, or the importance of education. It became clear to her that parents today are too busy just trying to survive each day to focus on actively teaching these important lessons to their children. Consequently, parenting skills are no longer being handed down from one generation to the next.
After 25 years of teaching, Sherry was inspired to write The Parent's Complete Guide - What to Teach, How and When to Teach It to remind parents of all the things children need to learn. In her book she lays out a plan for parents to turn their children into responsible, respectful, ethical adults. She describes in detail what skills need to be taught, how to teach them, and how to get buy-in from the kids. Based on both personal experience and extensive research, the book is full of hands-on, practical information that parents can begin using immediately.
Growing up in Southern California, Sherry enjoyed riding and training horses, competitive swimming, and SCUBA diving. She started teaching swim lessons when she was 12, and later put herself through college by lifeguarding and teaching swimming.
Always interested in learning new things, she has Bachelor's Degrees in Math, Computer Science, and Secondary Education. After graduating from Cal State, Northridge, she married an Air Force fighter pilot. They raised three boys as they traveled the country, living in Washington State, Arizona, Florida, North Dakota, and Alaska, followed by Japan (where she taught a Japanese Culture class at the middle school), Germany, England, and finally returning stateside to retire in Colorado.
Sherry is passionate about making the world a better place by helping parents raise their children, but also through volunteering. In Colorado she built and maintained a computer lab for a local non-profit, and taught a variety of computer classes to low-income women. She served as an Elder in her church (and was the first woman to be appointed Head Elder there) and currently is the Auxiliary President for a local hospital, where she also manages the gift shop. As a Squadron Commander's wife she mentored many young spouses, helping them adjust to the challenges of living in a foreign country.
Sherry currently lives outside of Sacramento, California, where she enjoys painting, gardening, quilting, and crafting. When not under Covid lockdown she enjoys visiting her three grown sons, their amazing wives, and her seven grandchildren.
